Capito Calls On Senate To Pass A Budget

Press Release

Date: March 20, 2012

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., calls on the U.S. Senate to honestly address our nation's fiscal challenges and provide certainty to job creators. It has been more than 1,000 days since the Senate has passed a budget.

"America has had enough of the Washington mentality of kicking the can down the road. Does the Senior citizen on social security have the luxury of deciding they're not going to budget within their means? Does the family of four have the luxury of not planning ahead and budgeting for the future? Does the small business owner have the luxury of not setting out a plan to budget spending priorities?" asked Capito.

Budgeting is something every individual, family and small business owner has to do, but the Senate seems to think it's immune to this fact of life. It is the most basic responsibility of Congress to pass and abide by a budget. In May 2011, the House passed a budget and sent it to the Senate for review. Unfortunately, it was shot down, demonstrating an unwillingness to find common ground.

"I am urging the Senate to get serious about protecting taxpayer money by setting spending and savings priorities. Interest payments on our debt are now more than $200 billion annually. I hope the Senate will change course and seek to find ways to save money. The House has signaled an openness to finding new revenue sources by closing special interest loopholes. We're here to work together," stated Capito.
