United States Representative Gary Peters Votes Against GOP Ryan Budget That Would Force Families Into Poverty While Protecting Billionaires

Today U.S. Rep. Gary Peters voted against the House Republican's Ryan Budget that would end the Medicare guarantee, and cut funding to education, Medicaid and food assistance. Despite all of these devastating cuts, the Ryan Budget would actually give windfall tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires and oil companies while they continue charging $4 per gallon across Michigan. By forcing the most vulnerable in our society to accept even greater sacrifice, this extremist Tea Party Budget would drive too many American families into poverty.

"Today House Republicans passed a dangerous budget that would force more American families into poverty because they think it's more important to protect tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "The Tea Party might think it's a good idea to throw children off of food assistance and drive up costs on our seniors, but they are wrong and I will never stop fighting back."

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is by far the most important anti-hunger program in the nation. SNAP helps more than 46 million people afford healthy food, including the 75% of participants who are in families with children. This program helps not only those who are temporarily without income like the unemployed, but it also helps working families who are living at the poverty line. In 2010, SNAP successfully lifted 3.9 million families out of poverty, including 1.7 million children.
