Issue Position: Small Businesses

Issue Position

Q: If elected, how would you help small businesses?

A: I mentioned just before Congress recessed we approved a package of 8 new tax credits and incentives for small businesses. I have spent the better part of my life trying to bring jobs and prosperity to our community. A job is the best social improvement program we have, and I will continue to focus my efforts on bringing good paying jobs to the District. We must extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) legislation. In the 90's we called it the "Welfare to Work" bill. The program reimburses 80 percent of a new hire's salary. It is a good program that is dying because of the Senate's inaction. Through a program I have organized in our District called "Jobs Now", companies and governments have pledged to hire 700 new employees if we can get TANF continued. Extending TANF will help small businesses right here in the Fifth District and is my top legislative priority when Congress returns to session.
