Senators Klobuchar and Franken Urge Administration to Defend American Auto Industry Jobs Against Unfair Chinese Competition

U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken (D-Minn.) and 30 of their Senate colleagues urged President Barack Obama to defend American auto parts manufacturers and workers against unfair, predatory and protectionist policies by the Chinese. Sens. Klobuchar, Franken, and their colleagues pressed the Administration to enforce existing agreements that prohibit unfair practices - like limiting U.S. exports to China and subsidizing Chinese exports to give Chinese products an unfair advantage in the world marketplace.

"China's unfair trade policies are undermining businesses and workers in Minnesota and across the nation, including those in the American auto industry," said Sen. Klobuchar. "I urge the Administration to crack down on China's anti-competitive trade practices and help create a level playing field for American businesses to compete in the global economy. As chair of the Export Promotion Subcommittee, I will continue to focus on opening new markets for U.S. exports to give our businesses more opportunities to grow and create jobs."

"The American auto industry provides good paying jobs to hardworking folks across this country-and the industry's success is vital to our nation's economy," said Sen. Franken. "Three out of four jobs in America's automotive sector are in auto parts, and millions of families depend on those jobs. That's why I urged President Obama to step up his efforts to stop China's unfair trade practices, which threaten businesses and jobs all over Minnesota and all over the country."
