Today U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former Texas Attorney General, released the following statement responding to the Justice Department's decision to oppose Texas' voter identification law:
"Voter identification laws are constitutional and vital to protecting the integrity of the democratic process.
"Today's decision reeks of politics and appears to be an effort by the Department of Justice to carry water for the President's reelection campaign."
Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary, Armed Services and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee's Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
