U.S. Rep. Gary Peters Leads Fight to Hold China Accountable for Illegal and Unfair Auto Trade Practices

Fighting for Michigan's auto manufacturers, yesterday U.S. Rep. Gary Peters sent a letter to President Obama asking the Administration to hold China accountable for unfair and anticompetitive auto trade practices by initiating a WTO trade dispute. As of December 15th, 2011, China imposed new antidumping and countervailing duties which increased the costs by 21.5% and 12.9% respectively on imported American vehicles with engine capacities over 2.5 liters. This comes on top of already existing duties and taxes that add 25% or more to the cost of American vehicles in China.

This is just the latest example in a long pattern of Chinese trade policy illegally stacking the deck against American workers to limit competition, and U.S. Rep. Peters thinks it's time to fight back.

"American workers are the best in the world and I'm committed to fighting against unfair Chinese trade regulations designed to kill competition," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "We must do everything possible to continue creating American jobs and working to ensure that Detroit's auto manufacturers can compete on a level playing field is an important step. President Obama has a long record of standing up for American auto workers and that's why we are asking him to initiate a WTO trade dispute with China to challenge these unfair trade barriers."
