Today Rep. Todd Rokita responded to President Obama's announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services will make changes to its proposed rule forcing religious organizations to provide contraception, sterilization and abortifacients in their healthcare plans:
"Today's announcement from President Obama is transparently political. It is clear the President and his administration remain committed to forcing religious organizations to pay for healthcare plans that cover contraception. This is simply an attempt to confuse the issue and quiet opponents until after Election Day.
This entire issue is an example of the ills resulting from the ideology of the Obama administration--an ideology that says government knows best and individual liberty should be sacrificed if it conflicts with the goals of a large, all-powerful federal government.
Individual liberty--including religious freedom--is fundamental to the greatness of our nation. This assault on our Constitutional rights cannot be tolerated."
This week Rep. Todd Rokita joined with 154 members of the House to send a bipartisan letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius calling on the Obama administration to reverse its unconstitutional mandate forcing the insurance plans of religious organizations to cover contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortifacients.
