Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R.W.Va., issued the following statement in response to the President's State of the Union Address:
"Our number one priority as lawmakers is to get people back to work. This means working together to reduce spending, lower our debt and give small businesses the certainty they need to hire and expand.
"Americans are looking to the President for leadership as we address our nation's most pressing issue--getting our economy back on track. We all agree that the challenges we face cannot be addressed in a partisan, one-sided manner. In the spirit of civility, I sat with my friend Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO). This country deserves a civil, productive conversation about how to create jobs and fix our economy.
"I had hoped that the President would acknowledge that the House has passed over 25 bills to create jobs. I had hoped he would put pressure on Senate Democrats to at least consider these bills, many of which enjoy bipartisan support.
"Unfortunately, the President continued to endorse failed policies that have only made our economy worse. The President's energy policy is the clearest example. I've felt like a broken record trying to convey that his policies are threatening jobs and causing energy prices to rise in Appalachia, but I fear that my concerns have fallen on deaf ears. The latest installment in his failed energy policy is denying the Keystone XL pipeline permit and missing the opportunity to create tens of thousands of jobs while securing energy independence.
"Moving forward, I urge the President to work with House leaders on legislation and listen to the American people about what they need to get our country going again."
