Statement

Partisan squabbling seems to have reduced discussions in our government to the tone of an unruly playground. As I drive home to Montross each evening, I am frustrated with the lack of common sense in discussions happening across Capitol Hill each day. The simple truth is rational solutions seem to be discarded or ignored. Congress must work to decrease uncertainty in our economy and to help promote job growth in the United States.

In my role representing folks across America's First District, my focus is finding common sense solutions that help you, your family and your neighbors. Of the common sense solutions Congress must pursue this year, fulfilling its primary Constitutional responsibility of passing a budget must be the starting point. On the day President Obama delivers his annual State of the Union Address, it will have been a thousand days since the Senate last passed a budget. I believe this is simply unacceptable. A clear and established budget is essential for reducing uncertainty for families and job creators, and promoting growth across the country. I am hopeful that both the House and Senate can pass a responsible budget. I look forward to hearing the President's comments on Tuesday night. There's much work to be done this year, and we must continue to fight for passage of good, accountable and transparent legislation, from a responsible budget resolution and full-year payroll tax relief extension to transportation and energy legislation. Planning a secure future for this nation is important not only to decrease uncertainty today, but for our children and grandchildren. I will continue to keep you posted on the happenings in Washington, DC, as we begin the second session of the 112th Congress.
