Pingree Welcomes Decision on Keystone Pipeline

Press Release

Date: Jan. 18, 2012
Issues: Oil and Gas

Pingree was early opponent of proposal

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree welcomed the news today that the Obama Administration is rejecting the application to build a controversial oil pipeline from Canada into the United States.

"Building the Keystone XL pipeline would not only be bad for the environment, it's bad for our long-term energy security," Pingree said. "Instead of continuing our reliance on oil bybringing dirty tar sands crude into the United States through this pipeline, we should be investing in clean energy right here in this country."

Pingree was an early opponent of the pipeline proposal. Along with a few of her colleagues in the House, Pingree first contacted the Obama Administration in the summer of 2010 to express concern about theproposal. Just yesterday Pingree and 24 of her colleagues wrote to the President, urging him to reject the pipeline.
