Ayotte Votes Against President's Request to Increase Debt Limit

Statement

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, today voted against President Obama's request to increase the debt limit by $1.2 trillion. Ayotte, a co-sponsor of the debt limit disapproval resolution, released the following statement:

"Washington's addiction to borrowing and spending has added more than $4.6 trillion to the total debt since 2009, increasing the debt limit from $11.3 trillion to $16.4 trillion. The government is spending so much, so fast that the President may request yet another debt limit increase before the end of this year.

"President Obama is asking for this latest debt ceiling increase even as he ignored our debt crisis during his State of the Union address. This is a failure of leadership. The American people deserve better, and I will continue to push for a bipartisan solution to our deteriorating fiscal situation. It took Republicans and Democrats to get us into this mess, and it will take both parties to get us out."
