An Arkansas congressman who supports an effort to have hospitals collect immigration data on emergency room patients says his tough stance is supported by his constituents, even as Hispanic activists say it threatens basic human rights.

Boozman said the issue, like many relating to immigration, is important and requires complex study. But he said it "doesn't need to be demagogued."

"We have to ask ourselves, 'Do we want to spend billions of dollars treating illegal immigrants versus other programs?"' Boozman said. "The input I've gotten from the majority of the Third District is 'No, we don't."'
