Ayotte Statement Regarding President's Request to Increase Debt Limit

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement today regarding President Obama's request to raise the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion:

"Congress can't keep rubber stamping President Obama's requests to increase the debt ceiling. This process is exactly what has led us to our record $15.2 trillion national debt and is bankrupting America. It's past time for the president to work with Congress on a serious plan that delivers the minimum $4 trillion in savings that his deficit commission said we need just to stabilize our debt. With the nation's debt having reached the equivalent of our total economy, we can't afford to keep putting off the tough decisions that will preserve America's economic future."

Senator Ayotte is a cosponsor of the debt limit disapproval resolution that will be introduced and voted on this month.

Total federal debt has increased by $4.6 trillion since President Obama took office. The debt limit was $11.315 trillion when he took office and could reach $16.394 trillion within a year.
