"Yesterday, Israeli and Palestinian officials returned to the negotiating table for the first time in more than a year. Their meeting was a small step, but one in the right direction.
"The status quo in Israel and Palestine is not sustainable and jeopardizes the possibility of achieving a two-state solution. As the only viable path to peace, a two-state solution has been the longstanding policy of the United States and has broad support in the international community. That goal will be even harder to attain if a negotiated settlement is not reached soon. I hope yesterday's meeting leads to substantive negotiations toward a two-state solution."
