Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, today illustrated the size and scope of the growing national debt.
During the Christmas season, several companies across the U.S. rent out reindeer for parties and private events. The cost to rent some of Santa's main mode of transportation for a day can start at about $3,000, depending on the number of reindeer requested and the location of the event.
The U.S. is so broke that based on the estimated starting price of $3,000 to rent approximately two reindeer, our massive $15.4 trillion debt could rent more than 10 billion reindeer.
"We don't need any deer to tell us we need to rein in our debt," said Flake.
Along with Senators McCain and Rubio, Congressman Flake introduced in the 112th Congress the Debt Buy-Down Act, which allows taxpayers to designate up to 10 percent of their federal income tax liability to reduce the national debt. The bill then requires Congress to reduce federal spending by that amount.
