National Guard Celebrates 375 Years

Statement

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement on the 375th birthday of the National Guard. The organization we know of today as the National Guard came into existence with a declaration signed on December 13, 1636, by the Massachusetts General Court in Salem.

"Today we honor an incredible tradition that has lasted for 375 years. For nearly four centuries, our citizen soldiers have put their lives on hold to protect this country at home and abroad. Whether they were independent farmers 300 years ago or high-tech engineers today, these brave people have left the comfort of their families, their jobs, and their communities to put their lives on the line when called. It gives me such pride to live in a state where so many men and women stand at the ready. With all that we have asked of them, especially over the last 10 years, I am incredibly grateful for the service they and their families have offered the country."
