Congresswoman Chellie Pingree Selected as Conferee for National Defense Authorization Act

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree today was selected to participate in a bipartisan conference committee of House and Senate members to reconcile the two chambers' versions of the National Defense Authorization Act.

"I'm very pleased to be able to take part in this process," said Pingree. "There are a number of things that concern me included in the legislation. We need to look at current military personnel policies that don't do enough to protect service members who are sexually assaulted. And I plan to voice my opposition to rules that erode basic rights by changing a system that has successfully and safely prosecuted hundreds of terrorists."

The conference committee began the negotiation process this afternoon and will continue through the week.

"I'm also disappointed that a Pentagon proposal passed both houses to shift military retirees from the U.S. Family Health Plan--administered in Maine by Martin's Point--to Tricare and Medicare," said Pingree. "I adamantly oppose the change to this very successful program and will work to make sure Martin's Point and retirees have enough time to make that transition."
