Young Signs on to Two Bills Aimed at Fixing 'Broken' Washington

Press Release

Date: Dec. 5, 2011

Less than a week after giving a speech on the floor of the U.S. House in which he told his colleagues that Hoosiers are frustrated with a broken Washington, Rep. Todd Young signed on to two reform bills aimed at starting to fix that system.

H.R. 187, the Congressional Pay Reform Act, would eliminate automatic raises in the pay of members of Congress. It would instead require a recorded vote each time Congress seeks a pay raise. H.R. 1148, the Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, would make it illegal for members of Congress to trade commodities and securities based on non-public information. The bill articulates currently vague law, and requires more stringent reporting of investment activity from members of Congress and some Congressional staffers.

"Washington spends too much talking about our problems, and not enough time working on solutions," said Young. "Americans are rightly frustrated and they're losing faith in their government. We can fix that first and foremost by getting down to the business we were elected to do. But we can also rebuild that trust by clamping down on some of the perceived benefits of the office and showing our constituents that we know why we were sent here."
