Lankford Says We Must Keep Working for Deficit Solutions

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman James Lankford (R-OK) encouraged Congress and the White House to keep working toward real solutions to tackle our deficit after the Joint Selection Committee on Deficit Reduction reported that it had failed to reach a deal.

"Last week, the national debt surpassed $15 trillion. For the third year in a row, we will run an annual deficit of greater than $1 trillion. The Select Committee's failure to achieve its goals gives us more, not less, incentive to take serious steps to address our deficit," said Congressman Lankford. "We must keep working to find real solutions. House Republicans put forward a budget last spring that cut $5.8 trillion from our federal deficit. I am disappointed that Democrats would not agree on even twenty percent of that proposal. I am ready to make the tough decisions to set our country on a sustainable path, and I hope my colleagues in Congress and the White House are ready to do the same. Remaining on the current path of increasing government spending is simply not an option."
