Lankford Says We Cannot Give Up on a Balanced Budget Amendment

Statement

Date: Nov. 18, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman James Lankford (R-OK) said we must keep working toward the goal of a balanced budget amendment (BBA) despite the rejection of H.J. Res. 2 in the House today.

"Through unrestrained spending of our tax dollars, prior leadership in Washington has essentially said, "Times are tough. I think I will make it easier on myself by making things tougher on our kids.' This cannot continue" said Congressman Lankford.

"With the national debt passing $15 trillion this week, I still believe a balanced budget amendment must be passed to serve as a mandatory check upon Congress because of its failure to manage the deficit," continued Congressman Lankford. "Washington has become far too accustomed to debt as a way of life, and this situation is not sustainable. It is past time for our nation to live within its means. Giving up on enacting a balanced budget amendment is not an option. Putting a constitutional parent in the room is the right and responsible thing to do, and I am committed to carrying this cause forward. Europe and its fiscal problems continue to serve as a wakeup call for any nation that ignores its sovereign debt."

The Budget Control Act still requires the Senate to vote on a balanced budget amendment before the end of 2011. Despite the vote in the House, Congressman Lankford is encouraging all Senators to approach this issue with the seriousness it deserves.

"My colleagues in the Senate can keep this discussion moving forward by engaging in a vigorous and thorough debate. I know there are several Senators from both parties who voted for this bill in 1995 and who still realize the importance of making difficult decisions in order to get our fiscal house in order. I hope they continue the conversation about our unmanageable debt situation and press on with urgency," concluded Congressman Lankford.
