Amodei Disappointed in Balanced Budget Amendment Vote

Statement

Date: Nov. 18, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) today issued the following statement on the failed passage of H.J. Res. 2 -- Proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution of the United States. A majority of Democrats voted against the measure, preventing the House from getting the two-thirds majority vote required for passage. The final vote was 261-165.

"It's frightening that someone can look at a $15 trillion deficit and not be moved to support a balanced budget amendment. What's it going to take, another credit downgrade?

"There are people here in Washington that don't think this is their mess to clean up. Rather than lead and make tough decisions, they prefer to stoke class warfare, pit Americans against each other, and leave the belt-tightening to the American taxpayers.

"Talk about taxing the faceless rich and corporations all you want, but the fact remains that when taxes are raised, we all pay more in the form of fewer jobs, lower wages and higher prices for goods and services.

"Reining in spending is something that both parties have failed miserably at in recent years. That is not an excuse for doing nothing."
