Statement on the Balanced Budget Amendment Vote

Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) released the following statement regarding House consideration of a balanced budget amendment. The amendment, which required a two-thirds vote for passage, failed 261-165.

"I believe that Congress is unlikely to balance the budget without a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. That's why I support two stronger versions of a balanced budget amendment that would help to restore fiscal responsibility, including a bipartisan proposal that would ensure that spending can't be increased too quickly during an economic expansion or slashed too deeply during a recession.

"Just as Colorado has a balanced budget requirement, so should the United States.

"The version House Republicans brought to the floor today is a sham as it fails to include capital budgets, as Colorado's balanced budget law does. Therefore, I cannot support it."
