Pelosi: Republicans Only Excercise Oversight Responsiblity for Partisan Political Reasons

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the call by House Republicans for a congressional investigation of CBS News for its stories pertaining to President Bush's National Guard service record:

"The Republicans' latest attempt to intimidate the news media is a waste of taxpayer money and an egregious example of how this Republican House only exercises its oversight responsibility for partisan political reasons.

"House Republicans do not want to investigate the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, the many abuses of power surrounding the Medicare prescription drug vote, or the flawed pre-war intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, yet they ask for a congressional investigation of a television news network's reporting.

"Clearly, Republicans will stop at nothing to distract the public from their miserable record."
