On Wednesday, November 2, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) will participate in the Food Stamp Challenge, organized by Fighting Poverty with Faith. The challenge engages leaders and community members across the nation to highlight the importance of feeding programs. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average weekly Food Stamp benefit is $31.50--approximately $4.50 per day, or $1.50 per meal.
"This is about more than just food stamps," Ellison said. "We are in the midst of a national conversation about the growing gap between the super-rich and the rest of us. More than half a million Minnesotans struggle with hunger. The food stamp benefit of $121 per week to feed a family of four equals one hour of salary for a person making $250,000 a year. For many of our neighbors, food stamps make the difference between going hungry and paying rent."
