Today Rep. Gary Peters hosted a constituent services roundtable to discuss the work he's done to help families throughout his Congressional district. At this event, Peters announced that since being elected to Congress, his office has recovered over $1.1 million for families he represents through constituent casework. Additionally, Peters' office has successfully fought to award almost $550,000 in annual benefits for families in the 9th Congressional District.
At the event Rep. Peters was joined by several area residents that have reached out to his office for help with their constituent casework.
"Having recovered over $1 million for families in the Greater Detroit area in the last three years, I want folks to know that we're here to help them," said Rep. Gary Peters. "A lot of people might not know this, but about half of what we do is working directly with people right here in our community to address their problems. Whether it's housing, VA benefits, Social Security, the IRS or many other things, our office is here to serve and I encourage everyone in the 9th Congressional district that needs help to please contact us."
"I was having a lot of trouble receiving the back pay Social Security owed me, but Congressman Peters' office helped and I finally received my check. They were also instrumental in helping to speed the process of my mom's VA death pension." said Mark Barringer. "Times are tough, so I'm very appreciative to Gary Peters for helping cut through the red tape."
"I was very surprised when the IRS sent me a notice that I owed them a lot of money," said Phyllis Noda, a small business owner. "After getting help from Gary Peters' office, we cleared up the confusion and the IRS not only reversed their charges, they actually sent me a refund."
"We were waiting for nearly a year on a VA claim for my mother, who is suffering from Alzheimers and needed expensive care. We called more than a dozen times with no response and we were discouraged and confused by the lack of communication from the VA," said Eleanor Reynolds. "Gary Peters' office got the job done - the VA expedited their decision and my mother is now receiving the veterans benefits she was owed for my father's service."
Since taking office, Rep. Peters has recovered $1,160,697.18 in retroactive benefits to families in the 9th Congressional District. Rep. Peters' office has also worked to help constituents receive annual revolving benefits for constituents totaling $547,908 per year.
