Capito Votes To Balance The Budget Once And For All

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., voted to get our fiscal house in order by supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. Unfortunately, some in Washington believe we should continue down a path of more spending and more debt; the measure failed 261-165 (2/3 majority required for passage).

"On Wednesday we hit a disturbing milestone--our national debt surpassed the $15 trillion mark. Government spending has spiraled out-of-control; under President Obama our national debt has increased an alarming 34% and it's only getting worse," stated Capito. "At a time when every baby born today automatically has $47,000 in debt on their shoulders, we should take the first steps to constitutionally require Congress to balance the budget. American families and small businesses create budgets and live within their means; the same should go for the government."

Forty-nine states already abide by some form of a balanced budget requirement. The last attempt at a Balanced Budget Amendment was in 1996 and lost by only a single vote.
