Duffy Supports Bipartisan Balanced Budget Amendment

Press Release

Date: Nov. 18, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Sean Duffy (WI-07) today voted in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment that would prohibit Congress from spending more than it receives in revenues, and require 3/5 majority in both Chambers to raise the debt ceiling. The Amendment would also require the President to submit a balanced budget to Congress.

"As of this week, our national debt has surpassed $15 trillion dollars. It is simply crazy to think Washington can continue to do nothing as federal spending and debt continue to grow," Duffy said. "While I would have liked to see additional limits to federal spending and caps on the budget, the reality is we have a divided government and this bipartisan Amendment represented our best chance to change the culture of spending in Washington."

"For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we have to act now to balance our budget," Duffy continued. "For too long, Washington has promised cuts and fiscal responsibility while only spending more of our money. I was sent here to put the brakes on this out of control spending, and that starts with a Balanced Budget Amendment. This Amendment already received bipartisan support in the 1990's -- there is no reason it shouldn't have the same support today when we're that much further in the hole."

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a Balanced Budget Amendment in 1995 by a vote of 300 to 132. In 1995, the national federal debt was $4.9 trillion. Today it exceeds $15 trillion. Currently, 49 states have some type of balanced budget amendment in place.

According to a recent CNN poll, more than 70 percent of every gender, race, age, income level, and regional demographic support a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget.
