U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement regarding today's announcement from the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction that the panel has been unable to reach an agreement:
"When I voted against the debt ceiling legislation that created the 'super committee,' I noted that even if the panel met its statutorily imposed deficit reduction target, it still wouldn't be enough to correct our reckless fiscal path. I'm deeply disappointed the panel couldn't even achieve the bare minimum in savings they were tasked with finding.
"With our national debt having soared past $15 trillion last week, this is a serious time for our country that requires all of us to rise above politics to do what's right rather than what's popular. At a time when we need to be working together, it's unfortunate that the president has chosen to sit on the sidelines as the deficit panel has gone about its work. The days of business as usual spending in Washington must end, and Congress and the president now need to find the fortitude to take on the entire budget and deliver the necessary savings just to stabilize the debt."
