Diabetes Awareness Month

Statement

Date: Nov. 4, 2011

There are more than 25 million children and adults in the United States who suffer from the effects of diabetes and about 79 million Americans are pre-diabetic. Sadly, diabetes claims the lives of over 200,000 Americans each year. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and I encourage District 9 residents to talk to their doctors about the best ways to prevent diabetes. Studies have found that those with pre-diabetes who lose weight and increase their physical activity are often able to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. While this month is dedicated to Diabetes Awareness, I hope you'll remember that it is important to focus on healthy living year round, and there is no better time than now to start getting healthy. Talk to your friends about the risks of diabetes, and talk to your doctor about prevention.
