CORNYN: CLEAR CHOICE IN IRAQ

Allawi stands like a beacon of freedom for the Iraqi people, Cornyn says

WASHINGTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Thursday regarding the address of Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi to a joint session of U.S. Congress:

"Prime Minister Allawi said it best in his address to Congress today: we are succeeding in Iraq. He conveyed clearly what all Americans should know - that we are winning the war on terror, reconstruction efforts in Iraq are ongoing, and millions of people now live with optimism and the hope for a better life.

"Allawi himself is a symbol. He faced exile and the brutality of the Hussein regime. He saw the oppression first-hand. And now he stands like a beacon of freedom for the Iraqi people. No amount of pessimistic campaign rhetoric can change that.

"The choice is clear. We can let Iraq return to the hands of thugs and dictators, or we can continue to support Prime Minister Allawi and the liberty and democracy he represents. We will finish this job, Iraq will hold elections, and our commitment to a free and prosperous Iraq will not waver."
