Fighting to Strengthen Small Business Development in Brooklyn

Statement

Date: Nov. 11, 2011

On Thursday, November 10th, I had the honor of hosting a small business breakfast roundtable with Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel for Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). At this event, key small business stakeholders in the 11th Congressional District of New York discussed the many issues they face when working to expand their businesses. Dr. Sargeant shared how the U.S. SBA Office of Advocacy can be a resource to these small businesses. After the discussion, I gave Dr. Sargeant a tour of the 11th Congressional District of New York, to see firsthand the unique nature of small businesses in central Brooklyn. I also had the opportunity to share my vision of economic development, empowerment and revitalization for the community, emphasizing the active participation of minority-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned small businesses in Brooklyn. Small businesses are the economic engine of this nation and it is imperative that we continue to strengthen them as we combat this economic downturn.
