National Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Working to Give a Voice to Those Who are Suffering

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and a reminder that this type of violence is still an epidemic in America. And, it's an epidemic that impacts all walks of life.

Long before there was an Austin Safeplace or a Texas Council on Family Violence, I first got involved in developing an effective response as a young Texas State Senator to help a group of committed Central Texas women successfully secure some state funds to launch what was then called the Center for Battered Women. It is important to remember these early struggles and early victories, and remind ourselves of a time when it was difficult to draw attention to domestic violence in our communities, and even more difficult to attract the resources needed to deal with it.
