Keystone XL Pipeline

Statement

Date: Oct. 28, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

This week I joined with Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to spearhead a letter requesting that the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of State launch an investigation into the State Department's handling of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and National Interest Determination (NID) for TransCanada Corporation's proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.

Over the last several weeks, there have been a number of high-profile articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Huffington Post alleging that the State Department has mishandled the evaluation of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. These reports indicate that there have been significant conflicts of interest involved in the review and that the State Department may have violated U.S. law. We also sent a letter to President Obama asking that he support this investigation and hold off on making an NID until the investigation is complete.
