Thwarted Terror Plot

Statement

This week the Justice Department announced that it had thwarted an Iranian-backed terrorist attack on the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington, D.C. First and foremost, we owe a debt of gratitude to the intelligence and law enforcement communities for preventing what could have been a devastating tragedy. The United States has long considered Iran to be a state sponsor of terror. For decades Iran has been targeting Americans and our allies. However, the news that agents of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were allegedly seeking to work with a Mexican drug cartel should serve as a reminder to Americans that a secure border is absolutely vital to our national security. Border security doesn't just mean a lack of violence along the border -- it means knowing exactly who is coming in and out of our country. Texans understand this, and I'm going to keep doing all I can to make sure my colleagues in Washington, D.C. do, too.
