On Wednesday, the Senate passed free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia, and South Korea. These were negotiated under the Bush Administration, but have unfortunately been in limbo for the last four years. Nevertheless, I was happy to join an overwhelming bipartisan majority of Senators in voting to approve all three deals. These trade agreements are good for Texas and good for the country. They'll open doors for Texas job creators who have waited too long for easier access to these markets.
These trade agreements are a great example of putting politics and poll numbers aside and getting to work on proven, job-creating measures. I believe one of the best things the government can do to stimulate the economy is to get out of the way, and that's precisely what these trade agreements will achieve. I'm hopeful that Senate Democrats will continue to work with Republicans in this level-headed, bipartisan manner as we take on the more daunting problems of our debt and deficit.
