I welcome the news that Gilad Shalit will soon be released. I am overjoyed for his family and I share their relief that this ordeal for Sergeant Shalit will finally be over. For too long, Hamas ignored the basic human rights of this young soldier who was captured when he was only 19 years old. This outcome is a testament to the perseverance of the Shalit family and Israel's deep commitment to the value of each individual life.
