Griffith Statement on Resignation of DoE Loan Guarantee Head

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement in response to the resignation of Jonathan Silver, Executive Director of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Loans Programs Office. The now-failed solar energy company Solyndra received a $535 million loan guarantee from this office:

"Today's resignation of Jonathan Silver raises even more questions about the Solyndra loan guarantee and other loan guarantees approved by DOE. While Mr. Silver was not the head at the time of the original loan guarantee made to Solyndra, he was in charge when $75 million of taxpayer money was subordinated. I believe this subordination was clearly outside the authority of DOE under the law. I have little confidence that DOE was doing its due diligence with this loan guarantee program. I am concerned about the possibility that Mr. Silver, on his way out the door, may have approved more questionable loan guarantees last week. This leads me to wonder what new information will be revealed as a result of the ongoing investigation by Chairman Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Mr. Silver's resignation does not end this investigation."
