Operation Fast and Furious

Last week, reports surfaced that a cache of weapons, ammunition, and ballistic vests that the ATF lost track of as part of "Operation Fast and Furious" were recovered by law enforcement officials in El Paso. This is the first time weapons from this ill-advised plot have been found on Texas soil. During this program the ATF allowed the sale of more than 1,000 weapons to straw purchasers suspected of affiliation with Mexican drug cartels. I've been critical of the Department of Justice and the ATF for this scheme since it came to light several months ago, and this latest development only strengthens my resolve to see this matter fully investigated. In response to multiple press reports alleging that a similar "gun-walking" operation was carried out in Texas, I sent a letter to Attorney General Holder back in August asking for a full accounting of any such scheme based in our state. That letter has gone unanswered. I'm going to keep working closely with Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Darrel Issa to make sure all details of this plot come to light and that such a bad idea is never carried out again.
