Statement
Dear Friend,
This week in Washington was marked with the passage of another short-term continuing resolution. This "CR' was passed in the early hours this morning and will fund the government until November 18th.
I did not support this continuing resolution for a number of reasons. The first is because I believe running the government in a piecemeal fashion, week by week, is not a good way to govern and abdicates the Constitutional responsibility given to Congress.
The House of Representatives passed a responsible budget several months ago that fully funded the government through the end of the year. This budget exhibited the spending discipline we need to get Washington back on track and also sent a serious message to the world and the markets that we are taking our debt seriously. The House did its duty and sent a fiscally disciplined, bipartisan, and balanced budget to the Senate earlier this year.
I supported that House-passed budget then, and I do now.
The "CR' passed this morning spent $24 billion more than the levels promised in the House-passed budget. I cannot in good faith support any measure that exceeds the levels I believe we need to get our spending under control.
Joyce visits D.C.
The Senate has been handed the budget we passed them earlier this year and has done nothing with it. They have also failed to create a budget of their own. It has been 878 days since the Senate has passed a budget. That not only is an abdication of their responsibility, but an egregious disservice to taxpayers. Arizona's families, small businesses, and farmers cannot forfeit their budgets or spend recklessly when money is tight and neither should Washington.
It was a nice change in scenery this week in Washington as Joyce joined me here for the craziness. It is always nice to have her around during these long weeks.
