Thanks to a measure introduced by Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), an additional one million young adults have obtained health care coverage over the past year. The new data were released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"I fought to allow young people up to age 26 stay on their parents' health insurance plans because, in today's economy, finding a job after graduation from high school or college can be challenging," Baldwin said. "I'm receiving many expressions of gratitude and relief because my suggestion is now law, and young people are able to secure health coverage through their parents' policies," she added.
Specifically, data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) show that in the first quarter of 2011, the percentage of adults between the ages of 19 and 25 with health insurance increased by 3.5 percentage points, representing approximately 1 million additional young adults with insurance coverage compared to a year ago.
