Van Hollen Statement on the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks:

"On Sunday we mark the solemn anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation. On that fateful morning ten years ago, the United States experienced the worst attack ever on our soil and nearly 3,000 lives were lost in a senseless act of terror.

"But in the aftermath of this tragedy, we saw the American spirit at its very finest. First responders rushed to save those in danger without a moment's pause, and many gave their lives to rescue others. Americans in every state lined up to donate their time and resources to help victims and start to rebuild. And no one will ever forget the heroism of those on United Flight 93, who ultimately sacrificed their lives to save countless others.

"Much has changed in the decade since the 9/11 attacks, but our values remain the same. America is a nation dedicated to freedom, and in the face of adversity we stand together. In the aftermath of that terrible September day, our nation showed its true character as we rallied together to meet a common challenge -- that ability is a part of what defines our country. So as we mark this anniversary, we remember those we lost, honor the countless acts of heroism we saw that day, and recommit ourselves to that sense of unity that makes our nation great."
