Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement on President Obama's speech to Congress and the nation tonight:
The President tonight presented a concrete jobs plan but it will only work if we can get the consensus to get it passed right away. The middle class in this country is on the ropes and it's time for Congress to put politics aside and do the work necessary to get the economy moving again.
This summer the message I've heard from Maine families is loud and clear--far too many of them are out of a job or working a job that doesn't pay enough to make ends meet. They are struggling to pay for their health insurance or put gas in their cars. I know my colleagues in Congress have heard the same thing and it's time to listen to them and stop playing politics and get to work creating the jobs we need to get the country back on track.
