Rep. Todd Young Working with INDOT, Municipal Leaders, to Learn About Cause and Impact of Sherman Minton Bridge Closure

Rep. Todd Young (R-IN9) met with officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation on Monday to learn more about the structural issues that recently forced the closure of the I-64 Sherman Minton Bridge over the Ohio River.

"At this time, I know everyone is still gathering more information to determine the impact of this situation," said Young. "Our staff will continue to work with state and local officials to stay abreast of the situation, and to determine what--if any--role we can play in helping to fix the structural issues and get the bridge open again."

On Friday, state officials closed the bridge after a crack was found in a load-bearing beam. On Monday, Young also reached out and talked with local leaders from Jeffersonville and New Albany about the impact of the closure.

"Obviously, safety should be the top priority in this situation," said Young. "I'm confident that INDOT made the right decision. But this will have a very real impact on traffic and businesses in the region. We want to be able to help any way we can at the federal level to get repairs made quickly and safely so that we can alleviate those concerns."
