Rokita Statement on 10th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks

Statement

Today Rep. Todd Rokita released the following statement marking the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks:

On this day we honor nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives in the worst terrorist attack ever to occur on American soil. The 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks is a day of reflection, and a time to thank our brave men and women in uniform who have served and continue to serve, as well as the men and women of our law enforcement and intelligence agencies who have done a remarkable job keeping the nation safe.

On September 11, 2001, we witnessed the worst men are capable of, but we also witnessed the best. We saw brave New York City police officers and firefighters rush into the twin towers to help their fellow citizens when instinct would tell us to do just the opposite. Passengers stormed the cockpit of a hijacked airliner in Pennsylvania to prevent it from being used as a missile against our nation's capital, trading their own lives to protect hundreds or thousands of others.

The September 11th attacks brought us together as a nation and reminded us of our mission, as citizens of the nation Abraham Lincoln described as "the last, best hope on earth."

We were attacked because of what we stand for. With the creation of our nation and our Constitution, for the first time that the most successful ideas for the self-governance all came together at the same time, in the same place. Our Constitution is based on the fundamental belief that our rights are natural; that they come from our Creator. Our rights do not come from any man or any government. As such, they cannot depend on, nor can they be changed or taken away by any man or government.

Ideas like natural rights and human freedom are the basis of what makes America exceptional, and are loathed by the terrorists that perpetrated the September 11 attacks and those who continue to plot against freedom loving nations.

On this 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, let us remember those lives lost and the families left behind, but also reaffirm we will not back down and we will never give in to those who seek to take away our rights and freedoms.
