Statement From Congresswoman Kathy Hochul On News That Rebels Have Entered Tripoli And That Libyan Leader Moammar Ghadafi's Rule Appears To Be Over

Statement

Date: Aug. 22, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

The long and brutal reign of Moammar Ghadafi appears to be over as Libyan rebels have entered the dictator's stronghold of Tripoli. While Ghadafi's more than 40 year fear and terror campaign is nearly done, this cruel and ruthless tyrant must still be found and he must stand trial for the atrocities he has committed. Personally, as a Syracuse University alum, I will never forget the horrors this criminal perpetrated when he masterminded and ordered the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, which killed 270 innocent civilians, 35 of which were SU students returning from a semester studying abroad in London. Once Libya and the world are free of Ghadafi's oppressive regime, the U.S. will have accomplished its objectives, working with NATO to protect the Libyan people."
