New Biofuels Initiative Will Support Homegrown Energy While Strengthening America's Security

Public-private partnership will produce next generation of biofuels.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today highlighted the importance of a new initiative to produce advanced aviation and marine biofuels to power U.S. military and commercial transportation. Klobuchar noted that the partnership can help strengthen rural economies in Minnesota as well as reduce the U.S. military's dependence on foreign oil. Klobuchar cited the groundbreaking work at the GEVO plant in Luverne to develop an alternative jet fuel as an example of the potential for innovative, homegrown energy production.

"This public-private sector partnership is a positive step for the homegrown energy industry in Minnesota and in rural communities across the country,"Klobuchar said. "The development of these new energy solutions can create good jobs for Americans right here at home, while also strengthening our national security."

Klobuchar has long been an advocate for an increased role for biofuels in the U.S energy supply. At a U.S. Senate Commerce Committee hearing, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar questioned witnesses on biobutanol's uses in the airline industries. Klobuchar noted that biobutanol plants are versatile in the products they can use to produce energy, allowing the plants to respond to rapidly changing market forces. Klobuchar also expressed her support for efforts by the U.S. military to utilize more alternative fuels in both its aircraft and vehicles.
