Congresswoman McCollum is a strong supporter of mass transit systems, including light rail, commuter rail and bus service. Investments in transit provide Minnesota families with transportation options, create jobs and strengthen the competitiveness of our economy. Transit also reduces highway congestion, energy consumption and negative environmental impacts.
Some voices in Congress are demanding that the federal government simply "stop spending," which would have the effect of ending investment in transit projects and other critical infrastructure. Without federal partnership, our community would not be able to build or maintain the infrastructure upon which our economy depends. The result would be lost jobs and reduced economic competitiveness. This is absolutely the wrong direction for the United States. In a time when the governments of China, India, Europe and Brazil are investing billions of dollars to construct advanced infrastructure, America cannot afford to walk away from the needs of our communities.
You can count on Congresswoman McCollum to continue working to develop a comprehensive transit system. In Minnesota, this includes the Central Corridor light rail project and the restoration of St. Paul's Union Depot for use as the multimodal hub for the Upper Midwest. Congresswoman McCollum will continue collaborating with state and local officials to secure federal funding for these projects as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
