Statement on Passage of Budget Control Act

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX-32), a Member of House Republican Leadership, today released the following statement regarding the passage of the amended Budget Control Act of 2011, the bipartisan agreement to raise the debt limit and avoid default:

"Since taking control of the House in January, House Republicans have led the fight in cutting spending and reducing the size of government so that our nation's free enterprise system may thrive. The future of American prosperity depends on the resolve of our nation's leaders to change Washington's broken culture of spending money we don't have.

"The Budget Control Act is a positive step forward in getting our fiscal house in order, restoring confidence in our economy and putting 14 million unemployed Americans back to work. This bipartisan plan responsibly reduces spending more than it raises the debt ceiling, includes no tax hikes on American job creators and imposes tough caps to restrain future spending and government growth. Building on spending cut victories for the American people, this agreement also advances the cause of a Balanced Budget Amendment which I support as the only permanent solution to our spending-driven debt crisis.

"House Republicans have now approved three plans to avoid default on our nation's current obligations, cut spending and set the stage for future spending cuts through meaningful reforms. I call on Senate Democrats and President Obama to join us in supporting fiscally responsible policies so that we can give our economy the certainty it needs and ensure a brighter future for generations to come."
