Perhaps the single greatest threat to our economic sustainability is our national debt. Usually when we think of the national debt, we think of it as a problem to be dealt with in the future. But as we've seen in several European countries on the verge of collapse, the problem can't be pushed back forever. We've seen it double over the last few years, and it is projected to triple in the next decade. That alarming rate of growth has contributed to a slow recovery for our economy in the midst of this national recession.
Unless we get serious about addressing our nation's debt problem soon, we may not ever be able to solve it. We must look at spending cuts in every area of the budget, and we have to look seriously at reforming entitlement programs that consume 60% of our spending. I also support the idea of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit Congress from spending more than it takes in. If we don't start taking action now, we'll have to take drastically painful measures later.
