Weprin Calls on House GOP to come to Responsible Debt Ceiling Agreement Demands GOP Negotiate in Good Faith

David Weprin, Democratic candidate for Congress in New York's 9th Congressional District, called on Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives to stop playing partisan games and come to an agreement on a debt ceiling proposal that tackles the deficit in a responsible manner while protecting the critical programs that millions of Americans rely upon, including Medicare and Social Security. Failure to come to an agreement on the debt ceiling by the August 2nd deadline would have global catastrophic economic consequences, including undermining our nation's economic recovery and jeopardizing millions of Americans' jobs.

Weprin said, "It is clear that House Republicans are wasting time with a plan that has no chance instead of working toward a bipartisan compromise to revent the first debt default in the nation's history and take meaningful steps toward reducing our long term debt.

What the Republicans in Congress are doing is shameful. To put it simply, they are playing chicken with our economy and are placing our nation's economic well-being in jeopardy for the sake of playing partisan games. The Republicans' insistence that the debt ceiling agreement be consummated on the backs of seniors, working families and children, while protecting tax subsidies and loopholes for Big Oil and companies that outsource jobs is simply shameful.

As someone who has spent more than 20 years working in public finance and 8 years as Chair of the New York City Council Finance Committee, I know how to balance budgets and close multibillion dollar deficits. Destroying Medicare and Social Security isn't the way to do it."
